Back

Jesus and Mary College (JMC) is a women-only college under the University of Delhi. It has the reputation of producing strong, compassionate, and competent women in a wide variety of fields. To name a few, some noted alumnae include Priyanka Gandhi, Neha Dhupia, Harleen Kaur, and Amapreen Lyngdoh. The college was founded by the Religious of Jesus and Mary, a Roman Catholic congregation founded by St. Claudine Thevenet or known as Mary of St. Ignatius (1774–1837) in Lyon, France. At the time of opening, the college offered only two degrees: English (Hons.) and BA (Pass), but quickly expanded to offer degrees in other subjects as well.

Now the college offers bachelor's degrees in Commerce, Arts and Mathematics, whereas offers honors degrees in Elementary Education, History, Sociology, Political Science, Vocational Studies, Hindi, English, Economics, Psychology, Mathematics, and Commerce. The college is located in the Chanakyapuri diplomatic enclave in New Delhi.

Based on principles of a regular convent institution, JMC goes a step further as it encourages the personal growth of each student in the field of academics, sports, or any other extra or co-curricular activity. JMC hosts its Annual College Festival for its talented students to come forth and demonstrate their skills and leadership qualities. Nonetheless, this college is one of the few colleges in the University of Delhi whose student body is not affiliated with Delhi University Student's Union (DUSU) and that's what sets them apart.

Not a very known fact about the college, but the college holds a morning assembly every day wherein the different departments take up the responsibility of the assembly every week consecutively (just like the ones we had in our school days). The College ensures the physical, mental, and intellectual health of its students. To take students beyond classroom teaching, the various departments of the college organize seminars and talks by eminent speakers on academic issues and hold an annual departmental festival. There are facilities for indoor and outdoor games, including a well-equipped gymnasium. The students regularly participate and excel in inter-college, inter-university, national, and international sports events. In addition to the discipline-specific associations of each department, the college has about 20 societies for extra-curricular activities such as debating, Western and Indian music, quizzing, choreography, and for environmental protection and awareness there is a Green society. The college also has All India Catholic University Federation (AICUF) and a Peace Society. The Women's Development Cell holds active workshops in legal literacy, women's rights, nutrition, and many other relevant issues. The Dramatics society has had memorable performances, including the 'Miracle Worker,' on the life of Helen Keller, and Bernard Shaw's 'Pygmalion'. Annual dramatic productions are staged under the banner of Shakespeare Society and Perry Bannerjee memorial event by the Departmental of English.

The computerized College library has internet facilities and a computer room for the staff. The college has wifi internet connections used by the staff and students. The college conducts UGC sponsored remedial courses for students who need additional help in different subjects. A variety of add-on certificate courses are also offered to students to give them an edge in today's job market. The college has a multi-purpose hall for various cultural activities and indoor games. It has a basement with a fully equipped computer laboratory, seminar room, and conference room as well.
