Kamala Nehru College often referred to as 'KNC' comes from the legacy of Smt. Kamala Nehru who lived and fought through the country's freedom struggle. From social work to fighting against caste-based inequality, she represented the values and qualities of a true leader. Being an all-girls college, it feels right to be associated with a person like her, who inspired and stood up for women of her time.
The college was established in 1964 and offered courses in humanities and eventually included courses in commerce as well. Today, the college is best known for its honors courses in Journalism, Political Science, Psychology, and Commerce. It presents a range of subjects to choose from; the honors and bachelor degrees are extremely affordable and in-budget for the excellent professors and opportunities that it promises. Kamala Nehru College stands in the frontline of 'A' Grade colleges of Delhi University, as accredited by the NAAC in the year 2016.
With a long list of subjects and well-trained professors, the college is also bustling with social clubs. The kind of exposure and growth they provide is magnificent! Societies like the Gandhi Study Circle, Consumer's Club, and Women's Development Cell to name a few works to sensitize students towards social responsibility and awareness.
The performing societies are well known amongst all the other colleges under Delhi University and often leave a mark in the famous "DU Fests". Coming to the juicier parts of the college like the canteen, the menu is extensive and includes a variety of good food. You won't be able to resist the finger-licking good Chole Bhature and Dilli-waale momos available at throw-away prices. The other amenities of the college include a full-fledged library with a separate audio-visual section, a well-architected auditorium, sports ground as well as a basketball court, a gymnasium, and eco-friendly bamboo built classrooms apart from the main building. It would be a shame if I didn't mention the infamous 'Chauppal' of KNC. It's the center of life in college. From Lakshaya's (the theatre society) showcase of theatre to being a safe place for not only the students but also adorable dogs and squirrels, it's fair to say that we all feel welcomed here.
Life outside college is equally exciting when you have multiple eatery joints right around the corner. What is a better bait for college students than aesthetic-draped in fairy lights cafes? 'Diggin' which is hardly twenty steps from KNC is our go-to place; whether it is after college project meet-ups, dates, or just a place to chill, this would be a personal favorite! Another cafe that deserves a mention is 'Coffee Bond'. Take your books and finish your last-minute assignments with a cozy cup of hazelnut coffee, you'll thank me later. For our street-food lovers, we have some great chat and kulfi right outside college. Tips to spend time between classes? Ansal Plaza, Select City Walk, and Safdarjung (SDA) are not more than a 7-10 minute auto ride or a metro station away. Lajpat Nagar being ten minutes away gives you just enough incentive to shop for more jhumkas and kurtas. There is nothing called "too many jhumkas".
Delhi is known for its superb connectivity and believe me it's not a lie. The closest metro station from college is exactly 7minutes away and is a mere Rs.10 auto-ride. Because the college is situated in the heart of South Delhi, the availability of autos, DTC buses, Uber, etc is never a problem. Green Park metro station on the yellow line is the closest and makes it convenient to travel across Delhi. Hauz Khas, Greater Kailash, Lajpat, and Saket are popular hubs situated in close proximity.
KNC does not offer on-campus accommodation but there are multiple PGs around the college. These differ based on budget, distance, and amenities but are nevertheless easy to find.
